High-Pressure Piston Pumps

Piston pumps tend to be of the variable output type whose flow rate is controlled from zero to max flow by a pilot or servo input signal.

Another variation is the pressure compensated pump that is stroked to give maximum output be de-strokes to whatever flow rate the system requires when the compensator pressure setting is reached.

In a ‘closed loop’ system a piston pump that can deliver output on each side of neutral position is often used, especially on transmission systems in vehicles, winches and conveyors. Most pump ratings are based on their output in either gallon per minute or litres per minute as a rated speed of 1500rpm at 0 psi or bar.
