Two Classes of Hydraulic Motors

Hydraulic motors divide into two classes:
Vane motors and gear motors are simple rotating systems with benefits including low initial cost and high rpm.
Plunger & piston motors in an axial or radial configuration are more complex and made for high quality rotating drive systems. Some axial plunger & piston motors provide adjustable transfer ratio.

The History of Hydraulic Motors

William Armstrong and English engineer and industrialist developed one of the first rotary hydraulic motors for his Swing Bridge over the River Tyne with two motors provided for reliability with each using a three-cylinder single-acting oscillating engine. Armstrong was a developer of a wide range of hydraulic motors (linear and rotary) that were used for a wide range of civil engineering and industrial tasks such as docks and moving bridges.
